The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon’s

There is a long and unbroken tradition in our country of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations with the lighting of beacons – on top of mountains, church and cathedral towers, castle battlements, on town and village greens, country estates, parks and farms, along beaches and on cliff tops. In 1897, beacons were lit to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

In 1977, 2002 and 2012, beacons commemorated the Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees of The Queen, and in 2016Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

On 2nd June 2022, we will celebrate another unique milestone in our history, Her Majesty The Queen’s 70th year as our Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth – her Platinum Jubilee. It is a feat no previous monarch has achieved.

More than 1,500 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, and one in each of the capital cities of Commonwealth countries in recognition of The Queen’s long and selfless service. The beacons will enable local communities, individuals and organisations to pay tribute to her as part of the official Platinum Jubilee Weekend of celebrations from 2ndto 5th June 2022.

Carnforth will be a part of this unique event with a beacon similar to the one shown. At 2pm on the day, the Town Criers will undertake the Proclamation to officially announce the lighting of the beacons at 9.45pm.

Full details have yet to be finalised but WATCH THIS SPACE. Soon we will also be announcing a competition that will give one of our residents the unique honour of lighting our beacon at the same time as the rest of the UK and commonwealth –https://www.facebook.com/Carnforth-Big-Weekend-104747322121216
